Fox Pen Permit Information

A no-cost, fox pen permit is required to operate a private fox pen area in the state of Florida. This pen is granted by FWC following an on-site inspection. Periodic inspections are conducted to insure compliance with the permit. However, these inspections are few and far between.

"The second problem was the lack of hide holes. We also documented some were blocked by concrete blocks."
Capt. Leroy Alderson (FWC) - Sandsifters Inspection Report 9/30/2008

Other issues with the permit are as follows:

»  Regulations governing fox pens are not in a rule and difficult to manage and enforce

»  Many loopholes exist to allow non-permitted pens to remain in operation with no oversight

»  Coyote populations may increase due to lack of a spay / neuter requirement for animals placed in a pen

»  Class II Permit rules outline more stringent guidelines, but are not required for private fox pens

»  Requirements are outlined on how to keep wildlife IN the pen, but requirements to keep wildlife OUT are not required

»  Pen permits are inconsistent depending on which pen is being permitted. Different pens have different permits

»  Required quarterly reports are not being received by FWC and are not being enforced
